DragSmith Farms

This farm is a 104 acre Certified Organic Produce Farm located in Barron, WI, with 10,000 Square feet of greenhouses and a retail store. They offer rustic tent camping, limited RV camping, and they are a part of the WWOOF network, which is how I found them.

WWOOF is a Worldwide Opportunities on Organic Farms network that links volunteers with organic farmers, promotes an educational and cultural exchange, and builds a global community conscious of ecological farming practices.

I’ve wanted to volunteer with WWOOF for awhile now and an opportunity arose this year while I was visiting my Northern Wisconsin home.

The farm is owned by Gail and Maurice Smith. They have 3 greenhouses, a shop, and several plots outside where they plant numerous organic vegetables.

I visited for a week and helped weed, plant, pick, and clean. It is a ton of work and they, like everyone else needing laborers, are very understaffed this year.

DragSmith sends a lot of their produce to local[ish] high-end restaurants and small, truly organic, grocery stores and local CSAs, etc. It is a lovely farm and I very much enjoyed my stay. Gail and Maurice are very kind and Gail is a warrior! She works harder than anyone I ever met in my life. I plan to return to their farm again next summer.

Volunteering at farms in the WWOOF network is a much needed way to help “good people doing good”, get GREAT exercise, meet like-minded people, all with free lodging and meals.
