Green Burial
A Green burial is a way of caring for the dead with minimal environmental impact that aids in the conservation of natural resources, reduction of carbon emissions, and the restoration and/or preservation of habitat.
When I started looking for a green solution for my burial, I found that there are composting and green options. The composting option sounded good but after doing some research, the green burial option is the one I chose.
Luckily, there is a Green Burial Council certified funeral home in Minden! Only about an hour from my home here in Fallon. Their name is Eastside Memorial and I toured it a couple weeks ago.
The process is much more comprehensive than I could have ever imagined. Here are the defining characteristics of a natural burial:
Absence of vault.
Non-toxic preparation of the deceased (no embalming).
Containers made of biodegradable materials: caskets, shrouds, and urns.
Discontinues herbicides, pesticides, fertilizers.
Grave is hand dug! No use of fossil fuels in preparation.
Natural rock headstone.
I chose a plot [68] and have planned for an organic shroud and organic willow carrier. I also need to find a rock for my headstone. How cool is that? I need to find a rock and then design the headstone graphics myself.
I could not be happier about this. Plus, I get to overlook the Sierra Mountains for eternity :)
