Sand Mountain & Pony Express

Sand Mountain is a singing sand dune 20 miles east of Fallon along U.S. 50. The dune is two miles long and 600 feet high. The sand originates from the ancient Lake Lahontan, that dried up 9,000 years ago. Sand Mountain Recreation Area is managed by the Bureau of Land Management and is open to off-highway vehicle use and has a huge campground. TONS of people camp out there in the spring thru fall. Sandboarding and sand skiing can be practiced at the site, too.

I went out there with a couple of locals with their sport side-by-sides but the sand was too wet to really have any fun. SO, I explored the ruins of the old Pony Express Station that is also out there. And then Sophie and I ran around in the dunes, jumping and climbing – Tico, of course, wanted nothing to do with it.

I had so much fun that I joined an ATV/UTV touring club so they can take me all around the area. They explore ghost towns, former mining sites, rivers, and other points of interest around Northern Nevada. They do a lot of camping trips, too.
