El Cosmico, Marfa, TX

Marfa, a small desert city in west Texas, is known as an artist community. It’s a progressive bastion in the middle of nowhere.

El Cosmico is a short term rental/event location that caught my attention as they were building the site in 2009. They have trailer rehabs [airstream/silver streak types], yurts, teepees, tents, campsites, and a variety of other interesting shelters.

The owner, Liz Lambert, is a well known Texan creative and hotel designer. She designed the El Cosmico resort to be rustic and eclectic but she has the funds to make it super comfortable. Most units have AC, there is WiFi, solid outdoor showers/baths, a band shell, full plumbing, and electricity. There’s also a nice Provisions store that has great merch and sells ice. Something you think about a lot when camping :)

The site is so successful that Liz bought a much larger property in Marfa and is moving the whole business there and will include permanent affordable tiny and 3D printed homes. Awesome.

My stay was wonderful. I was able to research the infrastructure, layout, location, and the company that supports an operation like this. I’ll visit Marfa again to spend more time and stay at the new location.
